Life & Travels Afloat in our Moody

Freebooter

Freebooter is a Moody 425. She is 12.7m long and weighs around 13 tonnes with all our stuff on board. Built in 1990, her early years were spent on the West Coast of Scotland. Moodys were renowned for building strong well-finished boats, and we have sought to keep her in excellent condition. That has included upgrading equipment from time to time, especially the instrumentation. She had only done 4,000 miles from new when we bought her in 2002.

In more recent times, a conscious move has been made to becoming more self-sufficient and reducing the need to use diesel for charging batteries. This started with fitting a high-efficiency wind generator and now solar panels together with windvane steering. In addition, a watermaker has been installed to reduce reliance on marinas.
