A Profitable Death

A Local Church

Funerals in Ghana carry a different slant. If you are ‘someone’ this can involve taking out full page colour ads in the local paper, listing all the principal mourners and setting out the arrangements. Peer pressure is everything!

Death can be expensive, not least as the immediate family is expected to accommodate relatives from near and far, and then feed and water them sometimes for days on end. To help defray the cost, contributions are invited. Get it right and the bereaved can make a handsome profit!

Of course the bigger the funeral, the bigger the collection. For big funerals, the banks will even send along a mobile bank counter so the contributions can be paid in directly!
